I watched as he sat on the edge of the wall, his little legs folded upon the cool, rough grey bricks. He sat still, talking to himself as he held something in his hands. I approached him slowly, soundlessly, me looking over his shoulder. There my little boy held a yellow daisy between his tiny fingers, twirling it around and around. I’m sure embracing the feel of it…it’s hairy stem, the earthy smell of it, the color of the petals…as yellow as sunshine.
When was the last time you held a flower, or anything in nature? I’m talking about really holding, touching, embracing…the way a child does? When was the last time you felt a cool smooth rock against your skin or a damp flower stem in your hands as you felt the soft waxy petals? Breathing in deeply the sweet fragrant smell of it, connecting you once again to the earth…the very place we walk upon every single day.
We are constantly surrounded by these wonders, yet there was a day in our lives where we just stopped looking, feeling, wondering. Instead of stopping, we’ve walked past with hurried paces and flooded minds… on some crazy mission to get to what’s next. Almost acting like we’ve seen it all. Some have stopped caring, some still care yet just don’t have the time.
Just like anything in life, you have to make the time. If you don’t, time will run your life for you. It only takes a few minutes to stop and look. Stop and wonder again. Stop and realize how lucky we are to be able to be surrounded by such power, such beauty, such magic… all created in our natural world. This magical wonder all here at our very own finger tips. Because in truth we haven’t seen it all. Most of us haven’t really seen anything. Nature is always changing. Nature is always here for us to learn from, to come to on our worse days or to run to on our best. It’s up to you how you see it. You either walk past once again, or next time stop and look and realize…this very moment is the only thing you really have for certain. Embrace it, don’t waste it.
