Random clouds make their mark across the winters sky today as the bare trees hold a complete stillness in them. Their stillness almost giving the impression that the entire world were calm at the moment.
Yet I am not fooled by this stillness. I feel the sense of calm yet there is a storm all around me. The world never rests. It’s darn right freezing out. In the distance I see the sky change with the colors of dawn. I am there, in that moment, marveling at the wonders of nature. The world is rushing, for Christmas is only days away. Yet it is the calm I’m after. It is the calm I seek out for my son.
As exciting as Christmas is, it has somehow become another holiday on the calendar where big name companies took the reins. These companies are now leading people to act out in ways exactly opposite of what many of us know the holiday season really is about and what it stands for in each and every one of our families.
If you don’t stop, take a breath and find your calm during this busy time of year, there is a fine chance you could find yourself in the commercialized rush of the season too. So no matter how busy your days, find five minutes, even one minute to just stop. Stop, take a breath and think about this special time of year. Think of who you will share it with. Embrace yourself in the comfort of close loved ones and close friends. Enjoy the good food put out and the homemade cookies baked. Be thankful for what you do have and not regretful for what you didn’t receive or get for others.
The bare trees might be fighting against whistling winds tomorrow or the weight of heavy snow in a week but when they calm, they calm. It is up to each and every one of us to take that moment and be mindful of our choices, our actions, our intentions. That moment of calmness…sheer stillness…is something that not only are we all in need of, it’s better than any material gift we could ever give or receive.
Although there may never be world peace, finding calmness in yourself leads to calmness in your family. It leads to peace and calmness in your world. If we all can find ourselves on this path, thus in turn there will be more peace in the world after all.
Happy Holidays to everyone out there. Find your calm. Give your calm. It will be the greatest gift you will give and the best give you’ll ever receive in return.
