Is there really a difference between a house and a home?
A house is where you hang up your coat and keys. It’s a place you grab something to eat and crash for the night. At times it may seem like a burden to clean, or perhaps you feel it’s constantly draining your bank account in repairs. A house is a place you toss your belongings time after time until you wake up one day and wonder where the hell it all came from. It’s a house, perhaps even unconsciously created, yet it serves its purpose.
A home is a place you hang your coat among the few coats you love to wear, a place for keys guaranteed to be there at the drop of a hat. The kitchen is for gathering and cooking…really cooking where the wonderful aromas drift through the air of roasted vegetables and rosemary and warm apple pie. It’s a place that’s warm and comfortable to rest your body and soul at night, a clean soft bed with sheets matching the colors of the room. Home is a place where cleaning can actually be mind clearing because you value it’s space and what it holds. For everything kept and brought into your home was mindfully selected. It’s decorated beautifully…to your liking. You willingly put money into this space for you know the benefits of preventive care.
Home is a place you can blast your music, dance freely or meditate. It’s a place where essential oils drift about while open windows can bring in the essence of the beautiful world outside. Home has a uniqueness to it. A certain personal touch. It’s a place that makes you smile. Home has been created mindfully, with much effort and determination, all with the goal to surround yourself with what you feel to be beautiful.
Whether you live in a house, a home, an apartment, or just a single room somewhere, don’t under estimate the power of making that space you. Make your space unique to you. Make your space a place you can rest your mind. It’s a great big, fast world out there, make yourself a place you can come to that’s peaceful. It really doesn’t have to take or cost much. When you surround yourself with simple beautiful spaces and places, your mind changes…it becomes clear again. We all deserve that. We all deserve to have a wonderful place to come to at the end of the day. Yet no one is going to create it for you, you have to put your effort into it to get anything out of it.
So the answer is yes, there is a difference in a house and a home, or a place and your space. Whether you live in a home, rent a room somewhere, call your car or van home or just live out traveling the world, bring into your life what you believe to be beautiful to you and create that space to calm and inspire you and the ones you may share it with. It will make a world of difference in your days.
